MERCEDES AZOFRA Biography

From a very young age, I realized that I was able to “see” more than most people around me, hence to perceive and understand art…While growing up, I was always with a pen in my hand, drawing…. I was blessed with a talent for observation, for discovering and appreciating shapes, volumes and colors (even though I was not aware of it back then).

I was also fascinated by sounds, by movement, by the musicality, and that led me to study professionally Dance and Flamenco in Valladolid then in Madrid. I worked as a dance teacher and performer for many years. Dance builds physical and mental strength, it forges the character, it teaches the values of hard work, teamwork, discipline, sacrifice, and above all the pursuit of excellence. It also develops coordination, balance, harmony and esthetic appreciation.

With time, however, my professional artistic interests gradually evolved from the performing arts towards the visual arts. Now I focus on painting and drawing, preparing exhibitions of my art works as well as working on private commissions.

I work between my two studios, my urban studio in the Las Letras neighborhood in the center of Madrid, and my studio in the Sierra, in San Lorenzo del Escorial.

In Madrid, I founded and I lead a women’s association which organizes cultural activities focusing on the arts.

The Arts are my passion. And sharing this passion is my life’s vocation.
